Hungry Ghosts: Artist Statement
According to Chinese Buddhism, Hungry Ghosts, or pretas, are mythical beings of incredible hunger who are unable to satiate it. They blindly walk the earth, decaying and craving like an addict.
My photography series of the same name consists of portraits of individuals among their prized objects. Like a mail-order catalogue or a "Must Have" post from a consumer-centered blog, the descriptions of these objects are detailed in small print below each photo. Instead of portraying these subjects and their objects as being desirable and therefore, "sellable," they are presented in a more realistic yet surrealistic way. The objects effectively tell stories about their owners but they are a visual ball and chain.
